A Future for Elephants – Caring for the Benevolent Behemoths of Thailand

According to Dr. Mututanont, who is the resident veterinarian at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort, taking care of elephants is a ‘massive job’. Being a large animal, an elephant requires 8% of its own weight in food, which roughly amounts to around 240kg of food per elephant. This makes it a costly endeavour, to say the least.

To raise funds and awareness for the Anantara Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament is held annually. This is a rare example of one of the many Chiang Rai hotels being concerned about the well-being of an iconic creature of Thailand. The tournament has now raised upwards of fifty-million Baht, for various elephant-related projects, which also concern the rescue efforts for domesticated as well as wild elephants.
