Mauritius has a big population of Indo-Mauritians, and the country celebrates almost all the religious events that are celebrated by Hindus, one of those events that are celebrated here is the Thaipoosam. The event falls during the month of either February or January depending on the Tamil Calendar. It is celebrated to pay homage and show devotion to Lord Muruga and as legends have it, it was the day that Goddess Parvati gave lord Murugan a “vel” (a spear) to vanquish evil. This day has been declared a national holiday in Mauritius and if you are stationed at hotels in East Mauritius the likes of The Residence Mauritius by Cenizaro you would have a fair chance of seeing the “Thaipoosam Kavadi” since the region has a high concentration of Hindus.
