Galle Fort undergoes renovations – Preserving this historic site

The building that was used by the Dutch since centuries ago as the office of the Dutch Administrator still stands as the ‘Galle Fort Post Office’. There are rising concerns however of the maintenance of this historic structure. The rooms are dusty, walls are severely damaged, and parts of the roof have collapsed as well! The historic value of this post office building is such that in order to preserve it the government has decided to renovate it.

The government will be taking in bids for this project. The company taking over this important project will have to be well versed in how to preserve such historical sites and comply with the policy of UNESCO too. Once preserved, this site may even bring in revenue from tourism. Visitors staying in hotels in Galle, such as the well-known hotel, The Fortress Resort and Spa, will start to visit this antique structure.
