Kandy Domestic Airport to Boost Tourism to Kandy – Flying To The Hill Capital

A key development feature planned for Sri Lanka’s Hill capital, the Kandy Domestic Airport is scheduled to be ready in 2016. Speaking at the EDEX EXPO held in January, Governor of the Central Province, Tikiri Kobbekaduwa stated that this was one of the primary needs for both tourism and business sectors. Kandy is one of the island’s main tourist destinations and is home to a range of Kandy hotels such as Cinnamon Citadel Kandy, making it an ideal choice for a domestic airport.

The Kandy Domestic Airport will offer easy and convenient transport links within the island to the Hill Capital which up to this point can only be reached by road. A land area that is close to the Maberitenna farm school has been proposed for the site of the new airport which will not only offer a 1 hour travel time between Colombo and Kandy, but easy access to such destinations as Trincomalee as well.
