Considered to be one of the oldest and grandest Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, the Kandy Esela Perehara is celebrated with great reverence and panache. Held in the month of August, the tentative dates for the festivities have been confirmed for the 16th to the 26th August of this year. Famed for being one of the most beautiful processions in South Asia, many tourists approach holiday and tour companies including the likes of Walker Tours to arrange excursions to watch it.

The perehara pays tribute to the Lord Buddha and the four guardian gods, Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini, while also beseeching them for blessings and a bountiful crop to enrich the lands. Various performances such as fire and whip dances, acrobatics along with a majestic procession of elephants and tuskers make the Kandy Perehara a must-see attraction, when visiting the tropical isle of Sri Lanka.
