Kandy Esala Perahera – A display of religious and cultural splendor.

The Kandy Esala Perehera is a spectacular display of cultural and religious traditions of ancient Sri Lanka. it features a breathtaking sight of traditional dancers, whip crackers, drummers, fireball acrobats, vibrantly decorated tuskers and elephants parading the streets of Kandy. At the centre of the parade is the largest tusker of the country decorated in colourful attire carrying the sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. This is a glorious festival that visitors can catch a glimpse of when staying in Sri Lanka luxury resorts in Kandy including Earl’s Regency. The festival is considered to mark the beginning of the monsoon season and serves the purpose of obtaining blessings from the gods for blissful rains and a flourishing cultivation. The Esala Perehera usually commences in the month of July on a date appointed by the Temple of Tooth Relic; this year’s event commenced on the 29th of July and spanned for a period of 10 days before it came to an end on the 8th of August 2017.
