Lantern Festival in Wan Chai – A Marvellous Spectacle

As a colourful local festival in the Chinese calendar, the Lantern Festival is held to mark the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations. Celebrated on a full moon night, the Lantern Festival is ironically not a public holiday in China although some stay home with their families for an extra day to take part in the annual event. Also known as the First Night Festival, it usually takes place in the month of February and is one of the oldest cultural elements in history with a legacy that stretches back 2,000 years.

Those who based themselves at Hong Kong hotel options the likes of Dorsett Wanchai Hong Kong were able to witness a multitude of bright lanterns that lit up all across the city. Lion dances were also part and parcel of the Lantern Festival celebrations as this folk dance form is omnipresent in nearly all local festivals.
