The festival takes place usually on a full moon night in November since it is the twelfth lunar month. It is a thanksgiving celebration to the goddess of water. The local community would gather together by canals, lakes and rivers to send their Krathongs floating on the waters. The Krathong is a lotus-shaped raft on which candles and incense are arranged and set afloat the waters. The flickering candles that light up the mass of water is a beautiful sight to behold.

There are a few reasons as to why the Thais celebrate this day. Namely, to thank the water goddess for a generous year’s harvest, to ask forgiveness for polluting the water and to let go of grudges and all such negative emotions. The Thais believe that including a lock of hair or a fingernail on your Krathong will help let go of the negativity. If you wish to get a glimpse of this magical festival, remember to plan your visit in the month of November. Accommodation options such as Anantara Sathorn Bangkok Hotel which is a Sathorn hotel in Bangkok may also host such festivities by the pool.
