Maldives Tourism is in New Hands for Better Growth – Preparing for Increased Development

The latter quarter of 2018 saw Ibrahim Mohamed Solih being appointed as the new president of the Maldives. This change also saw the subsequent appointment of Ali Waheed, a former parliamentarian, as the Minister of Tourism. A part of the new government’s campaign platform is the pledge to further develop tourism in the Maldives by way of increased funding and new initiatives.

The country is hugely dependent on the tourism industry and the lack of budget and programmes to promote the destination have been amongst the issues previously put forward by vested organisations and industry stakeholders. While visitors have the option of staying at a Maldives luxury resort including the likes of Milaidhoo Island Maldives and other such island resorts, the current trend shows a new development; travellers are now also on the lookout for cheaper guesthouse options too. It is hoped that the new government will not only further promote the Maldives but also look to meet this growing demand with suitable initiatives.
