Move to set up Foreign University in Kalutara – Welcoming Foreign Universities to Sri Lanka

Higher Education Minister, Lakshman Kiriella has submitted a Cabinet paper seeking to establish a branch of Manipal University of India in the Kalutara district. This decision has been executed with the intention of setting up another non-state degree-awarding institution in Sri Lanka. According to the minister, the university would offer degrees in Information Technology, Engineering and Management and it would invite private investors in the higher education sector of the country. An investment worth US$ 75 million, the project is expected to be set up on a 100-acre block of land in Kalutara with the university itself paying for the land following a government valuation. Currently, this part of the island is popular with tourists in search of a luxury hotel Sri Lanka has to offer along its south coast with properties such as Anantara Kalutara Resort amongst the options available.
