Nawam Perahera in Gangarama, Colombo, Sri Lanka – a cultural festival that took the world by storm

The Nawam Perehera has mesmerised a countless number of locals and tourist alike since its inception in 1979, with its beautiful combination of culture and pageantry. Taking place in Sri Lanka’s commercial capital, Colombo, the cultural and religious procession is held in February every year. A variety of skilled perform, from dancers and drummers to acrobats and fire breathers, parade through the streets of Colombo, followed by majestic looking elephants, draped in finery and lights. Organised by the Gangaramaya Temple, a Buddhist temple located in central Colombo, around 500 monks take part in the Navam Perahera as well, walking in the procession alongside torch and flag bearers. The popularity of the Nawam Perahera has grown so much that it is included in travel itineraries by tour operators, like Jetwing Travels, for instance, who promote cultural events during Sri Lanka holidays.
