Siripada Pilgrimage Season Begins

Above 7353 feet of sea-level, enveloped by surreal mists lies a most sacred place in Sri Lanka… It is so sacred that every year, thousands of devotees climb the mountain to pay homage to the sacred footprint at the top. The pilgrimage season that runs from December to May, commenced on the 6th of December amidst religious observances at the Udamaluwa of Sri Pada.

Sri Pada is revered among Buddhists as the boulder at the peak contains an indentation that is believed to be the footprint kept by Lord Gautama Buddha during his 3rd visit to the country. The pilgrimage season began with the sacred Casket, statue of God Sumanasaman being carried in a most ceremonious procession.
