State Vesak Festival at the Thotagamuwa Rajamaha Viharaya – A Time to Reflect

This year, Sri Lanka’s State Vesak Festival was held at the Thotagamuwa Rajamaha Viharaya inthe Galle district. The event which took place on the Vesak week in May was patronised by President Maithripala Sirisena and saw the participation of a great many Buddhist monks and devotees. Located within easy reach of hotels in Galle and villas in Bentota the likes of Villa 700, this Buddhist temple was where the well-known Thotagamuwe Sri Rahula Thero once resided.

Organised by the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, the State Vesak Festival 2019 was initially scheduled to be held over a period of several days; however, due to the current situation in the country following the Easter Sunday attacks, the event was shortened to two days. As part of the festival new buildings are going to be constructed in 200 Dhamma schools in the Galle District.
