The Day Maldives Embraced Islam – celebrating the birth of Islam in the Maldives

While the Maldives is usually associated with beautiful landscapes, palm fringed beaches and stunning island resorts, such as PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi Maldives, one of the luxury hotels in Maldives, it is also a devout Islamic country. The introduction of Islam to the Maldives is celebrated every year on the first day of the Islamic calendar month of Rabi’ al-thani. According to historical reports, the last Buddhist king of Maldives converted to Islam in the late 1100’s to further the friendship between Arab traders. Regarded as the cornerstone of its long, illustrious history, the day is commemorated as a national holiday with several religious activities planned by the Ministry of Home Affairs, to promote unity among the people. Residents also have their own mini celebrations which include public lectures on the history of Islam in the Maldives and unity among neighbours.
