The Jidai Matsuri Festival- a historical parade

The Jidai Matsuri festival also known as the “festival of ages” is held annually on the 22nd of October in Kyoto, where the parade consists of people dressed in accurate costumes from Japanese history. Around 2000 participants take part in the parade every year. Travellers planning to visit Japan in the month of October could consider staying at one of the popular Kyoto apartments such as Citadines Karasuma-Gojo Kyoto and witness this eye catching parade.

Depicting a history of over thousand years, the parade features military, aristocratic and cultural characters, each costume is designed carefully to resemble the exact historic period and the participants proceed in the reverse chronological order from the Meiji Era to the Heian Era. The two shrines that are believed to be containing the spirits of Emperors Kammu and Komei carried last in the parade. This spectacle offers a unique insight into the city’s rich heritage which is very much a part of its culture.
