The Main Maldivian Airport Sees Record Flight Movements – Development in Progress For 2019

At the end of last year, the main airport of the Maldives, the Velana International Airport saw a major upsurge in flight movements coinciding with the peak season for tourist arrivals. This peak season generally is from December to April; the ideal weather conditions during this time attract visitors from around the world who have the choice of enjoying Maldives water villa holidays at island resorts the likes of Adaaran Prestige Water Villas. Amongst the notable figures were the 729 air traffic movements recorded on the day prior to Christmas; this beat the previous per day record of air traffic movements which stood at 644.

Plans to develop the Velana International Airport have been underway since September last year though have slowed down. In his presidential address to parliament last month, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih highlighted this fact as well. It is hoped that the airport’s upgrade and expansion will pick up in speed and be completed to meet the increasing demand.
