The Spectacular Vesak Festival Celebrated by Buddhists in Sri Lanka – Observing the Life of Lord Buddha

The biggest religious and cultural festival in Sri Lanka, Vesak, which is celebrated in all Buddhist countries, marks the birth, enlightenment and death of lord Buddha. During the Vesak period, which falls in May, during the full moon week, Buddhists celebrate the life of Budhha with several religious observations and social activities. Colourful paper lanterns can be seen hung up along the streets and around homes, whilst brightly lit structures depict the story of Buddha. In addition, stalls along the roads distribute an assortment of food and beverages to passers-by as a way of alms-giving. The Vesak season is also popular with foreign travellers, and many tour operators like Nkar Travel House, for example, promote travel in Sri Lanka during this period for visitors who want to experience a cultural festival.
