Vesak at the Kalutara Bodhiya – Colourful Vesak Celebrations in Kalutara!

Vesak which is celebrated by Buddhists around the island marks the birth, enlightenment and the attaining of Nibbana of the Lord Gautama Buddha.

The city of Kalutara – one of the most venerated places in Sri Lanka and home to the famous Kalutara Bodhi (a sacred tree) attracted many enthusiasts during this festive season. The famous and the most sacred Kalutara Bodhiya is believed to be one of the 32 Bo Saplings from the notable Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. The hallowed bodhiya was lit with colourful bulbs and many programmes such as Bodhi Pooja and meditation programmes were conducted at the premises. Devotees and tourists from across the city and the island were seen in huge numbers during this Vesak Poya celebration. Those based at a luxury hotel in Sri Lanka during the season such as the Anantara Kalutara Resort were able to take part in this culturally and religiously significant event. Vesak Day was celebrated with much devotion in Sri Lanka leaving memorable moments in the hearts of every Sri Lankan.
