In 2025, Uber will introduce 200 electric vehicles in Johannesburg as part of its initiative to promote sustainable transport in South Africa. The pilot phase will begin in Johannesburg, with plans for a nationwide rollout. This move is a result of Uber’s partnership with BYD, a prominent Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, to help accelerate the country’s transition to green mobility, building on Uber’s global strategy to introduce 100,000 electric vehicles across key international markets.
BYD, already gaining traction in South Africa’s growing EV market, aims to provide affordable and eco-friendly EV options. The collaboration will also offer Uber drivers competitive pricing and financing options to make EV ownership more attainable. As electric mobility continues to grow, cities like Cape Town have already embraced electric buses, further supporting the move towards sustainability.
While South Africa’s EV market faces challenges, including high import tariffs, the government is focused on boosting local manufacturing. The introduction of electric ride-sharing options in Johannesburg — home to modern establishments like NH Johannesburg Sandton, which is considered one of the top options for those looking for the best hotel in Sandton Johannesburg — marks a significant step toward a greener future for South African transport. This pilot program will help reduce carbon emissions and shape the future of ride-sharing in the country, offering affordable, eco-friendly options for passengers and drivers alike.
