A new 813 million USD airport expansion is set to open in the Maldives, with a 1.3 million passenger terminal, seaplane jetties and financial aid from the Indian government. The expansion is part of the Maldives’ plan to boost tourism in the country.
The new terminal, an expansion of the Hanimaadhoo Airport, will be able to handle 7 million passengers a year, and will include a new runway, a new taxiway, and a new apron. The seaplane jetties will allow tourists to travel to and from the many Maldives beach resorts and islands more easily, including ones in atolls further away, such as Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives and nearby Malé islands.
The expansion is expected to create thousands of jobs and boost the economy of the Maldives. It is also expected to make the Maldives a more attractive destination for tourists.
The new airport expansion is scheduled to open in 2025, and is already nearing completion.
