As a result of the El Niño weather phenomenon in 2016, the biggest coral bleaching in history affected reefs in the waters of the Maldives. Major hotel chains the likes of Minor Hotels acted promptly by increasing its coral conservation project HARP (Holistic Approach to Reef Protection), realizing the monumental role that the reef played.
Led by Dr. Andrew Bruckner, Chief Scientist of the Living Oceans Foundation, this five-year HARP programme covers marine education and practical environmental protection. If, as a foreigner, you can be mindful of the status of the Maldivian ecosystem, it is only natural that local enterprises support the same. Thus, the initial way to ensure that you do your part to save the coral reefs is to make sure that you do not provide profit to any establishment that does not actively support conservation of the coral reefs.
