Several countries around the world will be implementing new taxes or increasing fees and taxes for already existing fees. This is done to counter the newest trend of “overtourism” that has recently started occurring in various countries after the tourism industries began their resurgence following the decline in COVID-19 casualties and infections. For the year 2023, the country of Barcelona will be increasing their tourist tax, while certain Portuguese towns and Thai areas will introduce a new tax to cope.
For the year 2024, Venice and Valencia will be introducing new taxes as well. As these countries strain under the weight of high tourism numbers, luxury hotels in Phuket such as the well-known Anantara Layan Phuket Resort can still expect to have relatively high occupancy rates, as this measure was only done to curb higher-than-normal tourism numbers.
