China recently announced a comprehensive mutual visa cooperation deal with 23 nations, including the Maldives, aligning with President Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to attract more Chinese tourists. Amid a diplomatic spat with India, Maldives seeks to diversify its tourist base. The move comes as India, historically its largest tourist market, saw a decline in visitors. Russia, Italy, China, and the UK now lead the influx. While China, once the top contributor, struggles with tourism recovery post-COVID, this agreement aims to facilitate outbound travel for its citizens. With over 60 countries offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival services to Chinese travellers, the pact aims to boost tourism exchanges, enriching travel experiences for both Chinese citizens and international visitors, including those visiting and staying at Maldives island resorts, such as the well-known Anantara Veli Maldives Resort.
