Dubai’s Staggering Economic Target Prioritizes Tourism

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has announced that tourism arrivals to the Middle East region surged by 15 per cent in the first half of 2022, compared to the same period in 2021. This was driven by the easing of restrictions and border closures due to the pandemic, as well as increasing vaccination rates. The region welcomed 24 million tourists during the six months, with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates being the most popular destinations. The UNWTO noted that the Middle East region has been hit hard by the pandemic, with tourism arrivals falling by 71 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019. However, the latest figures indicate a strong recovery for the industry in the region. The UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said, “The Middle East has demonstrated resilience and innovation in the face of the pandemic. With vaccination rates increasing and border restrictions being eased, we can expect to see continued growth in tourism in the region.”

The UNWTO report also highlighted the importance of sustainability and resilience for the tourism industry in the Middle East. It called for a focus on diversifying tourism offerings, promoting cultural heritage, and investing in digital technologies to enhance the visitor experience. The UNWTO noted that sustainable tourism can contribute to the region’s economic development and job creation, as well as promote peace and understanding between cultures.
