The Kandy Esala Perahara is one of the grandest Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, deeply rooted with religious customs and local traditions.. The grand perahara which is considered to be one of the oldest and majestic festivals in the country features performances of traditional dancers, whip crackers, fireball acrobats, musicians and decorated elephants. The tusker who is adorned in glittering and illuminated cloth carries the Sacred Tooth Relic, while the rest of the procession including colourful and traditional performers, parade through the streets of Kandy. Many a hotel in Kandy and in surrounding areas, like Hotel Hilltop are frequently fully booked as the procession draws thousands of people, both foreign and local. The Esala Perahera which lasts for 10 days will commence on 29th of July and will go on until the 8th of August 2017.
