Every country has its myths and folklore that have been passed down through the ages from generation to generation. Vanuatu is no different. One of the special days that have been dedicated to an old myth is John Frum Day. This holiday is annually taken on the 15th of February in Lamakara village on Tanna Island. To celebrate this day, an army of men paint “USA” on their chests and perform a series of military drills with wooden guns.
To commemorate World War II, this army of men raise the American flag and build models of aeroplanes used in the time with grass. They also build a makeshift landing strip. All this is done in hope that John Frum will return someday to keep the promise he once made. There are many versions of the story that leads to this day. If you are planning on a stay at one of the best hotels in Vanuatu during this time of year, try and catch a glimpse of the happenings on this particular island.
