It is a very rare sight to see a female crew member on a boat in Maldives besides the fact that it is rather very few Maldivian girls who work at resorts. Aishath Rizuna “Rizu” is probably the first ever Maldivian born female boat captain who received her training at Kurumba Maldives, a popular holiday resort Maldives has to offer. She is currently skipping boats on her own.
Rizu, who started working at Kurumba, Maldives back in November 2011 as a Kids Club Attendant was promoted as a supervisor in Majaa recreation in November 2012. She was born and raised in Funadhoo, Shariyani Atoll. Coming from a fishing family with her father being a fishermen, she was taught how to swim, snorkel and fish in a traditional Dhoni boat by her father during her young days. She learnt how to drive a small boat at the tender age of four and by the time she became a teenager she was sailing small boats in the lagoon of Funadhoo.
