Stronger ties, longer stays—Maldives welcomes Sri Lankans with open shores

In a significant diplomatic development, the Maldives has begun offering free 90-day on-arrival tourist visas to Sri Lankan citizens, effective from 29 July 2025. The move comes in response to Sri Lanka’s recent decision to grant one-year visas to Maldivians, starting 1 August 2025.

Announced during President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s official visit to the Maldives, the agreement marks a milestone in strengthening bilateral relations. The President met with key officials, including Maldives’ Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel and Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, to enhance cooperation across tourism, trade, and defence.

Sri Lankans travelling to the Maldives for tourism will need to show proof of sufficient funds and a valid travel document to obtain the visa.

With the new visa policy encouraging longer stays, Sri Lankan travellers now have greater freedom to explore the Maldives at a relaxed pace — from vibrant local islands to tranquil escapes like Dusit Thani Maldives, a renowned and preferred luxury resort in Maldives known for its peaceful ambience and natural beauty.
