The Maldives will soon launch India’s RuPay service, which is expected to strengthen the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). RuPay, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is widely accepted across ATMs, POS devices, and e-commerce websites in India. Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, announced that both India and China have agreed to use local currencies in bilateral trade and highlighted the importance of addressing the dollar issue and reinforcing the MVR.
Although no specific launch date has been announced, CorporateMaldives.com reported that Saeed indicated the RuPay card will be used for transactions in rupees within the Maldives. Discussions with India are ongoing to facilitate payments in rupees. As the country usually features services from the best all inclusive Maldives hotels, such as the OZEN Reserve Bolifushi, this may be useful for any Indian-national travellers in the future.
