In 2024, the Maldives celebrated a tourism milestone, welcoming over 500,000 visitors. According to the Maldives Ministry of Tourism, as of March 17, the nation had greeted 513,377 tourists, reflecting a 13.9 per cent increase from the previous year. China emerged as the top source market, with 60,699 visitors, followed closely by Russia, Italy, and the United Kingdom, each contributing significantly to the total arrivals. Additionally, Germany, India, France, the United States, Poland, and Switzerland played pivotal roles in boosting the Maldives’ visitor numbers.
Despite India’s previous dominance in tourist arrivals, it has shifted to the sixth position, with 31,437 visitors, aligning with the Maldives government’s ambitious target of attracting two million visitors this year. Notably, tourists are now staying in the Maldives for an average of 7.8 days, indicating a notable increase in visitor engagement compared to previous years – although whether they are to a 5 star hotel in Maldives, such as the Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort remains to be seen.
