Mauritius has confirmed plans for a digital pre-travel authorisation system in its 2026-2027 budget, described as an e-Visa in the Budget Speech and as an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) in the official annex. Mauritian authorities said the system would let all non-citizens apply online before travelling, reducing arrival-terminal queues and strengthening national security.
The measure requires amending the Immigration Act, and while a “prescribed fee” will apply, neither the amount nor a launch date has been announced. Officials have not yet confirmed which nationalities will be required to use it, leaving open whether it will extend to travellers currently exempt from visa requirements.
With tourism a core pillar of its economy – 1.4 million arrivals in 2025 – Mauritius faces pressure to keep the new system fast and traveller-friendly.
Currently, the island has maintained its position as a leading tourist destination in the region, with the best luxury hotels in Mauritius ranking globally. The new e-Visa initiative is expected to smoothen the travel process, accompanying brands like The Residence Mauritius in upholding the nation’s renowned tourism offerings.
It remains unclear whether the ETA will replace existing entry procedures or simply add a new digital step. The budget also outlined Golden Visa reforms and Occupation Permit revisions aimed at attracting investors.
