Mauritius Tourist Numbers Soar Across Five Months: A Dream Start to 2026

The gross tourism earnings in Mauritius soared to Rs 48.1 billion between January and May this year, according to the latest numbers published by the Bank of Mauritius. This constitutes a 19% year-on-year increase when compared with the Rs 40.4 billion earned over the same period in 2025.

Moreover, this year-on-year growth isn’t reflected solely in total earnings over the five months; the country also saw notable increases in monthly tourism revenue. For instance, the month of May alone generated tourism receipts which amount to an estimated Rs 8.641 billion, a notable rise from the Rs 8.249 billion earned in May 2025. While these numbers are still provisional, they indicate a positive start to the year amid an increase in tourist arrivals, by both air and sea.

Tourism has been a vital sector for the Mauritian economy and will continue to be so as the country works to expand its reputation as a tourism destination. In addition to its roster of world-class hotels, which include the likes of The Residence Mauritius, the island republic plans to extend its appeal to the MICE market by leveraging its strategic location, its array of adventure activities and its diverse Mauritius hotel packages.
