Mawlid al-Nabi in Maldives This Month – Celebrating the Birth of Prophet Muhammad

This month, Muslims across the world will commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam who was born around 570 CE. In the Maldives, this event is known as Mawlid al-Nabi or Mawlid and is celebrated on the 12th day of the Islamic calendar’s third month, Rabi-ul-Awal; this year, it falls on 27 September 2023. During this time, it’s customary for there to be sermons about the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad along with people reciting from the Holy Quran and gathering at mosques and public squares.

In the Maldives, people also get together with families and friends, prepare traditional dishes, and make donations to charitable causes. Some also engage in singing a type of devotional poem in the local Dhivehi language about Prophet Muhammad’s teachings or his life. While Mawlid al-Nabi is a public holiday with many businesses being closed, tourists can still enjoy stays at private islands in the Maldives; beach resort properties here in places like the Baa Atoll such as Milaidhoo Maldives make an ideal choice for those holidaying at this time or any other period of the year.
