Maya Bay in Krabi, Thailand Reopens for Tourists – Balancing Tourism and Conservation

One of the most popular and beautiful natural wonders in Thailand, Maya Bay that’s part of Phi Phi Islands in Krabi has reopened for visitors once more. This enchanting attraction which reached global fame after being featured in the Hollywood movie ‘The Beach’ (2000) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was temporarily closed from 1st August to 30th September 2024. This was done to give the natural environment time to recover from the effects of having visitors throughout the year and underscores the country’s efforts to find a balance between tourism and conservation.

During the closure, several steps were taken to preserve the ecological integrity of this area, including maintaining buoys to protect coral reefs and the fragile marine ecosystem. With Maya Bay now open, travellers can once again look forward to experiencing its spellbinding beauty on excursions from a hotel in Ao Nang Krabi. Ideal properties here to stay at include Avani Ao Nang Cliff Krabi Resort from where one can embark on island-hopping adventures to Phi Phi Islands home to this picturesque bay.
