Opened on 1st January 2022, picturesque Maya Bay in Thailand can be visited once more after a closure of over three years. This bay and its picturesque beach shot to stardom in 2000 after being featured in the movie “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Subsequently, Maya Bay saw a huge influx of tourists that eventually led to officials having to close this attraction to visitors in June 2018; since then, the area has had time to rejuvenate and recover including its coral life which was severely affected.
Located on Phi Phi Leh, an uninhabited island, Maya Bay can be reached on excursions from Krabi including for those staying at Ao Nang hotels and resorts. Properties such as the SHA Extra+ certified Avani Ao Nang Cliff Krabi Resort make an ideal base for such island-hopping escapades. To preserve the area’s natural beauty, new rules are in place too, like a new drop-off point at the back of the island and visitor number limitations.
