The Greater Mekong Subregion is called ‘GMS’ and has a combined population of approximately 326 million people. The region is composed of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and 2 sub-provinces of China, and they are all bound by the Great Mekong River. The whole region was badly hit by the COVID 19 pandemic and there was also a long 3-year drought that upset all farmers and cultivators. Farm production was also challenged, and depleting fish catches were also reported during the past 2 years.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has declared that it will be directly involved with the projects carried out to alleviate the poverty of the local communities. If you take a Mekong River cruise with companies like Mekong Kingdoms, you’ll be able to witness the locals still spending a river-based lifestyle, far away from sophisticated lives compared to the rest of the world.
