Preserving heritage, enhancing tourism—Sri Lanka strikes a balance at 130-year-old icon

The Sri Lankan Government has reversed a previous decision to hand over the historic Nuwara Eliya Post Office building to the Urban Development Authority (UDA). Instead, the Cabinet has now approved plans to modernise the landmark for tourism purposes while continuing its original postal functions.

Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed the move during the weekly briefing, noting the new strategy aims to preserve the heritage structure and simultaneously create new tourism-driven revenue opportunities.

Built in 1894, this Tudor-style red-brick building remains one of Nuwara Eliya’s most visited attractions. The earlier 2023 proposal to convert it into a hotel under India’s Taj Group drew significant public opposition.

The revised plan reflects growing interest in sustainable tourism around heritage sites. Travellers exploring this scenic highland town can enjoy a mix of history and comfort with nearby stays like Araliya Green City, one of the standout hotels in Nuwara Eliya for a memorable hill country escape.
