Over Twofold Increase in Sri Lanka’s August Tourism Revenue – Positive Signs for Rest of 2023

Sri Lanka has witnessed a steady increase in international travellers this year which has been mirrored by a boost in tourism revenue. As reported on the EconomyNext news website on 9th September 2023, the country had earned approximately USD 210.5 million in revenue from tourism during August this year; this was more than double the earnings from the same month in 2022 when USD 67.9 million was recorded. At the time, the total tourism revenue from January to August 2023 stood at USD 1.3 billion which was also an increase of almost 57% from the same period last year.

Not surprisingly, a key reason for the increase in this revenue was that the country welcomed 136,405 tourists in August this year which was over double the amount from the same month in 2022. With total arrivals surpassing 950,000 by 12th September 2023, the tourism industry in the country is steadily moving ahead on the road to recovery. Travellers from around the world have shown great interest in experiencing the island’s many allures once more including its idyllic shorelines at places like Pasikuda Beach; hotels here nestled along the sand such as Amaya Beach, Pasikudah continue to offer a safe coastal haven attracting families, couples, and solo adventurers alike.
