Passenger Train for Cross-Border Travel Boosts Trade – China and Laos Relations

The China-Laos railway has brought significant benefits to Laos by providing a crucial connection between Laos and the rest of Southeast Asia, facilitated with the assistance of China. The opening of this railway has enabled the movement of both freight and passengers, resulting in notable improvements in logistics, tourism, and overall economic growth for the country.

Operating at a speed of 160 kilometres per hour, the China-Laos railway establishes a vital link between Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, and Kunming and Yunnan in China. The partnership between China Railway Kunming Group and the Laos-China Railway Co. ensures the smooth operation of the railway, contributing to its success.

Since its launch, the railway has witnessed impressive numbers in terms of passenger and cargo transportation. As of mid-April, the operators of the railway reported that approximately 14.43 million passengers and 18.8 million metric tons of cargo have been transported, highlighting the significant volume of activity and demand generated by this transportation route.

One of the notable advantages of the China-Laos railway is its accessibility to popular tourist destinations. The railway’s route includes stops at places such as Luang Prabang, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, travellers have the opportunity to explore the region and experience the luxury Mekong River cruise offered by companies like the Mekong Kingdoms, further enhancing the tourism potential of the area.
