Plans for Fortress Islands – Maldives Shifts Focus from Citizen Relocation to Ambitious Coastal Protection Plans

In response to the increasing threat of rising sea levels and depleting drinking water resources, President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has announced a departure from plans for citizen relocation. Instead, he proposes an ambitious strategy involving land reclamation and the construction of elevated islands to counter the encroaching waves.

The Maldives is renowned for its pristine beaches and coral reefs, not to mention, resorts like OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo loved by tourists staying at the hotel’s Maldives overwater villa. However, the island is also grappling with the impact of the climate crisis. Former President Mohamed Nasheed had previously raised concerns about the potential for citizens to become the world’s first environmental refugees, exploring relocation plans. However, President Muizzu is now seeking $500 million in foreign funding for comprehensive coastal protection measures, expressing confidence in keeping citizens in their homeland.
