Plans to Reopen Five Thai Islands to Foreign Tourists – Getting Back on Track

The Tourism and Sports Ministry of Thailand is planning to open up five Thai islands in August to welcome foreign tourists following previous restrictions due to COVID-19. The islands are Koh Samui, Phuket, Koh Phangan, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Tao. Properties on islands like Koh Samui are already open for domestic travellers; it’s hoped that the easing of restrictions will draw international visitors too, be it to stay at a Samui resort or Koh Phangan hotel.

Initially, it’s expected that a limited number of foreign tourists will be allowed to visit depending on the COVID-19 screening processes at each island. The government has also introduced a Safety and Health Administration (SHA) certificate for hospitality businesses which follow approved COVID-19 guidelines; additionally, the Ministry of Public Health and Department of Health issue certification for a “Lodging Facility with High Hygiene and Safety Standards”. Certain resorts in Thailand including the likes of Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort have achieved both certifications.
