Sri Lanka’s transition towards renewable energy is accelerating, with rooftop solar panels and battery energy storage systems becoming increasingly common across homes and businesses. As renewable energy in Sri Lanka continues to expand, diversified conglomerates with interests in the energy sector, such as McLarens Sri Lanka, have a role in supporting safer and more sustainable growth.
A recent technical forum organised by engineering professionals brought together regulators, renewable energy specialists, and industry professionals to discuss the risks associated with solar and battery installations. Direct current faults were highlighted as a significant hazard, as they can persist longer than conventional electrical faults, increasing fire risks. Poor wiring and unqualified installations were identified as common causes, while arc fault circuit interrupters were recommended as an additional safeguard.
Battery energy storage systems present further risks, particularly uncontrolled temperature spikes. Experts highlighted the need for stronger oversight of unlicensed installers, improved recycling of used batteries and solar panels, and closer collaboration between regulators and industry to ensure this growing sector remains safe and sustainable.
