Strengthening skies to open new journeys across the island
Sri Lanka is actively considering proposals to expand its domestic aviation network as part of a broader strategy to support tourism growth and improve island-wide connectivity by the end of 2026. The initiative aims to reduce pressure on heavily visited coastal zones while opening faster access to emerging destinations.
With tourist arrivals continuing to rise and earnings projected to reach around US$4 billion in 2026, authorities are prioritising improved air links to support multi-destination travel. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) is particularly focused on enhancing access to the Northern and Eastern regions, enabling smoother movement for international visitors exploring the island.
Current discussions also include partnerships with private operators to improve affordability and efficiency, alongside potential support models for regional routes. The plan is expected to stimulate local economies by increasing demand for services and accommodation beyond traditional hotspots, including popular options such as Araliya Beach Resort, Unawatuna, and other established 5 star resorts in Unawatuna, Sri Lanka.
By strengthening domestic air routes, officials aim to create a more balanced tourism distribution while enhancing overall travel convenience across Sri Lanka.
