According to statistics from local tourism promotion offices, tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka have increased by 67.5% in comparison to last year, from 62,980 to 105,498 arrivals in total. Although the month of April is considered “off-season”, coming directly after the end of European winter, the increase in numbers bodes well for many luxury properties, such as the Anantara Peace Haven Resort.
April 2022 saw the tourist arrivals reduce from 106,500 in March as a result of policymaking in government and the Central Bank, with issues that triggered the country’s worst currency crisis to date. This disrupted the fuel and electricity supply island-wide, as well as preventing an early recovery of the country’s economy as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, other South Asian countries such as Bangladesh and Pakistan are facing similar currency issues due to similar policy-making decisions.
