Sri Lankan Borders Now Open to Tourists – Secure “Bio Bubble” Created

Last month saw Sri Lanka open its borders for tourists while strict health protocols were put in place as well; it has created what it calls a “bio bubble” in which travellers can move in relative freedom to certain areas of the island. The reopening of the border took place on 21st January 2021 with the Bandaranaike International Airport and Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport accepting foreign arrivals. While there is no minimum stay duration, travellers must reside at a government-approved resort or hotel for up to two weeks.

All arriving tourists must present a negative result of a COVID-19 test taken within 96 hours of their departure, while also submitting an online health declaration form. It will be hoped that the opening of the borders will kick-start the tourism industry. From seaside getaways at Kalutara hotels or resorts such as Mermaid Hotel & Club to cultural attractions and wildlife safaris, the island has much to offer those considering a holiday here.
