From flying passengers to the beautiful island of Sri Lanka and making opportunities for stays at Nuwara Eliya 5 star hotels the likes of Heritance Tea Factory possible, SriLankan Airlines is now recognised as one of the most sustainable airlines in the world. The airlines achieved this by launching their upscale brand called “Mathaka” which was showcased at the Sri Lanka Design Festival held in Colombo last year.
Mathaka is a brand that allows retired aircraft materials like seat covers, curtains, blankets, uniforms and wooden cargo pallets to be transformed into everyday items like peg dolls, tote bags, table runners and more. SriLankan Airlines also partners with 3 sustainable businesses led by women to co-produce these items. This initiative aims to empower women from disadvantaged economic backgrounds as they are presented with opportunities to help produce these eco-friendly products as well.
