Thailand’s Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, announced plans to expand the country’s visa-free travel program to citizens of several new nations. This initiative follows the success of visa waivers for Chinese and Indian visitors, which significantly stimulated the nation’s critical tourism sector.
Prime Minister Thavisin acknowledged the positive economic impact of the visa-free program for China, indicating the government’s intention to replicate this success with additional countries. While specifics remain undisclosed, this announcement underscores Thailand’s commitment to attracting a wider range of international tourists. The tourism industry plays a pivotal role in Thailand’s economy, and early results from the existing visa-free program are promising. Foreign tourist arrivals have surged by 48% in the first two months of 2024 compared to the same period last year, with a significant number coming from China. This positive trend aligns with the government’s ambitious goal of welcoming 34-35 million foreign visitors in 2024, potentially exceeding the pre-pandemic record of nearly 40 million in 2019. Popular spots for visitors include Krabi and Phuket, with 4 star hotels in Krabi the likes of Avani Ao Nang Cliff Krabi Resort being go-to’s for most visitors.
