The Lost City of Tu’am May Have Been Found – Unearthing a Pearl of the Past

Recent excavations on Siniyah Island, off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have unearthed what archaeologists believe could be the long-lost city of Tu’am, a fabled centre renowned for its pearl trade. This discovery was highlighted by the Times Travel website on 25th June 2024.

Previously shrouded in mystery, Tu’am has been documented in historical texts, but its exact location remained elusive, sparking speculation across various regions in the UAE. However, compelling evidence from Siniyah Island suggests this may finally be the site of the legendary city.

Tu’am’s history stretches back to at least the 4th century, flourishing as a prominent pearl fishing centre by the 6th century. As reported by Times Travel, the Umm al-Quwain Department of Tourism and Archaeology’s excavations have revealed a collection of ancient residential buildings alongside remnants of a pearling village and a Christian monastery dating from the same era.

Pearling has been a cornerstone of the region’s heritage and visitors seeking a deeper understanding of this traditional livelihood can explore the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. Travellers based at properties like Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort can visit the Suweidi Pearl Farm, which provides insights into the ancient practice of pearling and even the chance to search for pearls amongst the mangroves. Those staying at a Ras Al Khaimah hotel can also head to captivating Al Jazirat Al Hamra, an abandoned pearling village that offers a glimpse into the past.
