At this year’s grand final of the World Travel Awards held this month in Lisbon, the Maldives emerged as the World’s Leading Dive Destination. As in previous years, there was stiff competition in this category that featured such nominees as Mauritius, the Great Barrier Reef (Australia), Thailand, Bora Bora (French Polynesia) and the Galapagos Islands. It was the Maldives however, that walked away with this prestigious accolade which it has now won for three consecutive years.
The country which is home to a plethora of coral and marine-rich dive sites continues to be a huge draw to diving enthusiasts; they have the option of staying at a Maldives resort including the likes of Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort which offers special diving safaris too. This award, garnered at what is considered the most exclusive ceremony for the travel and tourism industry, further helps to cement the country’s position as the premier dive destination in the world.
