The Maldives was nominated in eight key categories in the “World Nominees” section of the prestigious World Travel Awards including the World’s Leading Destination, World’s Leading Beach Destination and World’s Leading Island Destination. It was also nominated for the World’s Most Romantic Destination, World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination, World’s Leading Tourist Board, World’s Leading Dive Destination and World’s Leading Cruise Destination.
Highlighted in an October 2020 online article of The Edition, this achievement is expected to help promote tourism in the Maldives; water villa and beach bungalow options are available for travellers with properties such as Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas having reopened following the removal of travel restrictions. The country was also nominated multiple times in the Indian Ocean section including the Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination, an award it has won a whopping 12 times since 2003. Based on voting, the winners will be announced in the grand finals set to take place on 27th November 2020 in Moscow, Russia.
